Art as a Medium for Writing

March 7, 2020

In this workshop students will be inspired to create interesting stories based on famous pieces of art.  Students will have a virtual gallery.  Works by Vincent Van Gogh, Monet, Pablo Picasso, Diego Rivera, and many other renown artists will be presented.  Students will have time to select an art piece and write down their ideas for a story.  Time will be allotted to share ideas in a small group prior to writing.  Students will spend time drafting a story, and once they have completed it they will share it with a partner.

Let's Explore Opinion Writing using Food

Do you have opinions or feelings on different food? Do you have favorite foods or have reasons why you like one food more than others? Come join me and learn how to express your opinions clearly using food as topics. We will try sampling certain flavors of certain food item and learn how to write clear paragraphs about which flavors you prefer and why. Discover how to write opinion writing and have fun while doing it.

Making Impact with Argument

I once read this profound quote from human rights activist Desmond Tutu: “My father used to say, ‘Don’t raise your voice; improve your argument.’” And I thought about how often we resort to raising our voices to be heard when we have done little to be understood. It also made me think of the times we shy away from an argument because we are not confident in our ability to say what we believe. In the case of argument writing in school, I’ve seen both instances. I’ve seen students write with a passion, yet that passion was no more than a bundle of emotions yearning to be tempered with logic. And I’ve seen other students become altogether defeated because the only thing they are convinced of is that they have nothing to say. If either of these speaks to your experience as a student who has tried to write an argument, then this workshop is for you! You will learn “moves” you can make to develop your argument writing. If you are confident in your argument writing skills, then this workshop is for you! You will learn how to take what you are already doing to the next level!

Enjoy an interactive session working in small groups to enhance argument writing. Discuss and practice craft moves to support a point you want to make, use the expertise of another to validate your thinking, put your spin on a concept from another text, and explore ways to develop a new line of thinking in response to gaps or missing information in a text. Practice these writing skills to help meet the academic demands of college, career and community writing.
