Improving the Academic Writing
of Long–Term English Learners

For 4–8 Grade Teachers

Do your re–designated Long-Term English Learners (LTEL) or other students struggle with academic reading and writing? Do they know how to take structured notes, summarize or write extended expository responses proven to improve reading comprehension? Participants will practice and learn how to teach underprepared students how to write to compare/contrast, propose/support using evidence, sequence ideas, explain/describe, and explain cause/effect. Transitioning easily from oral to academic writing, checklists/rubrics to document growth, sentence/paragraph/essay frames, and ways to increase equitable oral/written participation techniques will also be shared.

Participants: Please bring your textbook, curriculum guide or supplementary materials. Collaboration time will be provided to develop lesson plans based on the workshop.

Light Fire Under Your Feet:
Ignite, Motivate, and Engage All Learners

For 2–8 Grade Teachers

Whether you are new to teaching or are a seasoned educator, this summer open program may be for you. Do you need ideas for sparking writing? Do you want to increase students' motivation? Are you in need of ideas of how to engage the different learners in your class? I will model cooperative learning structures that increase student output and create safe classroom environments. We will work on strategies to help students become coaches and teachers become facilitators. We will practice the essential tools in Step Up to Writing, how to gradually release responsibility to students, and design writing lessons to integrate with Science, Social Studies, etc. Participants should bring teacher's editions and/or curriculum map (scope and sequence).

East Side Story:
Aligning Writing Strategies with Writing Standards
to Encourage Authentic Student Writing and Voice

For 8–12 Grade Teachers

None of us became teachers because we wanted to align student writing with assessment standards in order to enable students to pass national tests, anymore than people enjoy the musical West Side Story because they can align its plot to that of Romeo and Juliet. In a four–day workshop taught by veteran East Side teachers Marty Brandt, Kathy Gonzales, Rosemary Kuhn, and Marie Milner, participants will be introduced to writing–instruction strategies that fulfill content standard expectations while promoting student success far beyond that of earning test scores that claim to indicate "proficiency." We hope to promote the teaching of writing as a craft, an art form, and a means by which to explore the universe and one's place in it.

Beyond the Five Paragraph Essay

For 8–12 Grade Teachers

In this intensive four–day program, we will investigate ways to analyze and imitate models of nonfiction writing. Participants will study a variety of analytic approaches to a text—mythological, sociological, psychological, deconstructive, as well as textual—and learn how to generate effective structure, voice, and writing strategies. Emphasizing alternative approaches to style and grammar, we will explore ways to expand the nonfiction writing curriculum by including memoir, reflective essays, persuasive writing, poetry, setting and character pieces, interview and profile, and academic writing utilizing varied research methods. Participants will receive dozens of student models demonstrating successful ways to teach writing.

Hands–on, Clock Running:
Smart Ways to Teach Writers' Workshop in the K–5 Classroom

For K–5 Grade Teachers

This workshop focuses on your practice with the goal that you make and take lessons to use in your classroom.

  • Observe model reading and writing mini-lessons and practice them;
  • Observe conferencing and then lead conferences;
  • Observe small group strategy lessons and give them.
  • Explore characteristics of the genres and try out key strategies for teaching them.
  • See teacher consultants working live with the Young Authors' Institute on campus.

Bring your favorite picture or chapter books. Bring a memory stick for myriad handouts. We will tackle predictable problems: motivating the reluctant, managing assessment and adopted reading programs. This session is for teachers new to writers' workshop and those who want to refine their teaching, with break out groups for primary and elementary. The main source material is Lucy Calkins's Units of Study.
