What is the San Jose Area Writing Project Invitational Summer Institute?

The Institute is a professional development program promoting the effective teaching of writing and reading and the professional awareness of participants. At the completion of the program each participant becomes a Teacher Consultant of the San Jose Area Writing Project.

What will participants do during the Institute?

Morning sessions will be devoted to demonstration lessons given by participants based on one of their successful classroom practices. During the morning teachers will also discuss current research and best practice. Afternoon sessions will be devoted to participants' own writing and responding to one another's writing in small response groups.

Who is selected for the Institute?

Twenty teachers from kindergarten to college level who have demonstrated competence and commitment as teachers of English Language Arts in their classrooms.

What will selected participants receive?

All participants selected for the Institute will receive an $800 stipend for the summer or a $500 stipend plus 6 units of full–semester graduate credit. In addition, all participants will receive a $100 stipend for attending each of two school–year follow–up sessions in fall 2011 and spring 2012.
