What is the San Jose Area Writing Project Invitational Summer Institute?
The Institute is a professional development program promoting the effective teaching of writing and reading and the professional awareness of participants. At the completion of the program each participant becomes a Teacher Consultant of the San Jose Area Writing Project.
What will participants do during the Institute?
Morning sessions will be devoted to demonstration lessons given by participants based on one of their successful classroom practices. During the morning teachers will also discuss current research and best practice. Afternoon sessions will be devoted to participants' own writing and responding to one another's writing in small response groups.
Who is selected for the Institute?
20 teachers from kindergarten to college level (K–14) who have demonstrated competence and commitment as teachers of English Language Arts in their classrooms.
Who will direct the Institute?
The Summer Institute will be directed by:
- Jonathan Lovell, Professor of English and Director of the San Jose Area Writing Project
- Nancy Kennett, SJAWP Teacher Consultant and English teacher at Piedmont Hills High School
- Laura Brown, SJAWP Teacher Consultant and 5th–grade teacher at Valle Vista Elementary School
When and where will the Institute take place?
- The Institute will begin with a required orientation meeting on Saturday, June 5, 2010, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM on the San José State campus.
- The Institute will then run for 19 sessions from Tuesday, June 22,
2010, to Wednesday, July 21, 2010:
- Week #1: Tue –Fri, Jun 22–Jun 25
- Week #2: Mon–Thu, Jun 28–Jul 1
- Week #3: Mon–Thu, Jul 5–Jul 8
- Week #4: Mon–Thu, Jul 12–Jul 15
- Week #5: Mon–Wed, Jul 19–Jul 21
- Morning sessions will run from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
- Afternoon sessions will run from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM.
- There will be no afternoon session on the final day of each week. Two follow up sessions will be held during the 2010–2011 school year.
- The Institute will be held on the San José State University campus in Sweeney Hall, Room 229.
What will selected participants receive?
All participants selected for the Institute will receive an $800 stipend for the summer or a $500 stipend plus six (6) units of full–semester credit. In addition, all participants will receive a $100 stipend for attending each of two school year follow–up sessions in fall 2010 and spring 2011.
